Illinois Substance Abuse Statistics

Every year, many Illinois residents face addiction, a persistent problem linked to drug or alcohol use. This issue can lead to legal troubles. When people are caught in addiction’s grip, they find it hard to control their substance cravings, jeopardizing not just their financial situation but also their social status, employment, and clean record. The economic toll of addiction on the state is significant, estimated to surpass $3.5 billion.

Alcohol Addiction

Over 6% of adults in Illinois are facing alcohol addiction. The good news is that alcohol addiction treatment can be highly beneficial. Starting with alcohol detox, patients withdraw from alcohol under the care of trained medical staff. Some may need medication to manage physical and mental symptoms. Our clinical team collaborates with your healthcare providers to determine the best plan. We also assist in understanding the potential cost of alcohol addiction treatment through your insurance provider.

Marijuana Addiction

Marijuana became legal for adult recreational use in Illinois in 2020. Anyone over the age of 21 can purchase and use the drug. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, most cannabis users smoke or use edibles or vape oils or liquids. In healthcare, marijuana is most commonly used to manage pain, headaches/migraines, sleep disturbances, and lack of appetite.

Admission to treatment centers for cannabis use disorder fell in 2020 to 5,467 compared with over 8,000 admissions in 2018 and 2019 per the Treatment Episode Data Set.

Heroin Addiction

From 2011 to 2015, law enforcement seizures of heroin surged by 2,035%. Those numbers continue to rise today. A 2017 assessment called “Heroin in Illinois,” revealed a rise in both fatal and non-fatal overdoses attributed to heroin. The state has seen such a significant increase in heroin-related issues over the past decade that various agencies, including the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Illinois Department of Human Services, formed a Heroin Response Work Group, declaring heroin overdoses an emergency. 2022 data from the Illinois Department of Health showed more than 3,000 overdoses in 2021, many of which were attributable to opioid drugs like heroin or prescription pills.

Opioid Addiction

In 2020, opioid analgesic overdoses were the leading cause of fatal overdoses, with fentanyl being the main contributor to this trend. Together, they resulted in nearly 800 fatal overdoses, but only 258 were related to opioids or combo medications excluding fentanyl. The remaining 540 were attributed to fentanyl.

Cost of Drug and Alcohol Rehab in Chicago

Some people may choose to pay for rehab in Chicago privately. Many other people find their insurance covers at least a portion of their Illinois drug and alcohol treatment depending on their policies and needs. More than half of the substance abuse recovery centers in Illinois accept some form of private insurance. However, when we consider the true expense of addiction, the cost of treatment pales in comparison. And let’s not forget about the toll addiction takes on one’s physical and emotional well-being, leading to additional healthcare costs, damaged relationships, depression, and anxiety.

While detox and rehab do require a financial commitment, they are ultimately investments in oneself that offer immense potential for a better life in recovery. At our treatment center in Illinois, we prioritize affordability, striving to make addiction treatment accessible to all individuals in need. The cost of medical detox and rehab can vary depending on factors such as treatment plans, medications, levels of care, and insurance coverage. Rest assured, we are dedicated to helping you explore options to cover the cost, regardless of the specific figure involved.
